Our Classes

At its core, classical ballet emphasises discipline, artistry, and a strong technical foundation, forming the basis for many other dance styles.
Our classes follow the internationally recognised Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus, and students sit annual examinations with a registered RAD examiner.
In addition to the RAD syllabus, we offer open classical ballet classes in a range of styles, including American Ballet Theatre methods and Vaganova (Russian) training. This approach provides students with a broad, well-rounded technical foundation.
Classical Ballet

National Character Dance is a stylised theatrical form of traditional folk dance adapted for the classical ballet stage. Rooted in classical ballet technique, it develops posture, coordination, musicality, and expressive performance while introducing dancers to diverse rhythms, styles, and cultural influences.
Through styles such as Spanish, Hungarian, Polish, and Italian dance—commonly seen in classical ballets—students build versatility, stamina, and stage presence, making National Character Dance an important part of a well-rounded ballet education.

The Performance Group is an important part of students’ training at BBCA and supports the development of stagecraft and versatility across a range of dance styles. These include classical ballet, contemporary, neo-classical, demi-character (including acting and classical mime), and national character dance.
It is not a competition group as such, although students may have opportunities to perform in competitions. The aim is to develop well-rounded dancers who can perform and gain experience across many styles of dance.

Traditional contemporary training, stemming from a strong foundation in classical ballet technique, combines the strength, alignment, and discipline of ballet with the freedom, fluidity, and expressiveness of contemporary movement. Dancers develop strong technical foundations while exploring a wide range of dynamics, floor work, and musical interpretation. This training encourages versatility, creativity, and artistry, promoting safe movement practice and preparing students for a range of contemporary performance styles.

Body conditioning for ballet dancers focuses on developing the strength, flexibility, stability, and endurance needed to support safe and effective dance practice. Training targets core strength, alignment, balance, and muscular control, helping dancers improve posture, turnout, and overall technical performance. Conditioning exercises are designed to complement classical ballet technique, reduce the risk of injury, and promote longevity in training. Through carefully structured work, dancers build body awareness, resilience, and coordination, supporting both technical development and confident, expressive movement.
